Twins or Blighted Ovum?

by Kelly
(West Palm Beach, FL)

I am pretty sure that I should be 7 weeks, however, the doctor said that I may be experiencing a blighted ovum. It appears to be 2 gestational sacs but no baby or yolk sac. I am second guessing my dates now thinking that I may be earlier. This was taken on Friday 2/20/09. I go back for another ultrasound on this Wednesday 2/25/09. My doc said that he may do a D & C if there is no difference then. I am so stress out right now and can't wait until Wednesday. I have a 9 year old son that I had at 19 years old. I am now 28 and have had an ectopic pregnancy at 6.4wks in 2005, and a miscarriage in 2008. Please let me know if you have similar stories, and if there is any hope that my babies will be fine on Wednesday.

Twin pregnancy and beyond
by: JENIFER

I did an ultrasound which one had a viable fetus in a sac and the other sac seemed empty with no viability and could be termed blighted ovum.how scientific can this be?

by: Brandi

I went back to my dr and he said it all looks like a very early pregnancy. The sacs are growing and we are in the process of checking my betas. I will have an ultrasound next Tuesday and two more betas between now and then. So it's a waiting game. He believes I was actually in my 4th week first time and that still would have put me very early on the second one. So I'm stuck in this grey area. I just have to relax and enjoy my pregnancy. The er is where it all went wrong anyway. My dr said the lady dr that I saw was out of line in telling me that I may not actually be pregnant. I still am hungry 24/7, I could die with heartburn most evenings and I am starting to get a little sluggish. Which would correlate perfect with gestation. I just feel foolish not knowing when I had my last period. That really makes things a whole lot more difficult. I am going nuts waiting for a little baby to show up in one or both eggs. I'm hoping to have both babies. We were so over the moon and it's been challenging holding faith! I feel like early dr visits make things so much more challenging. Had I just waited instead.
I really do appreciate your input. Good and bad it gives me more faith every story that I read. It helps to hear what can happen. Especially with an obgyn that doesn't want to make any calls. He doesn't want to discuss anything bad. He just wants to be slow.

My blighten ovum is 13yrs old
by: Yvette

I now have a 13 yr old daughter that was considered a blighten ovum. I was so sad when I got the news, that, there was no baby and that my blood count wouldnt pass the 12 hundreds. Then I came that aweful visit, when the doctor said its time to get the DNC. I couldnt bring myself to do it and so I waited at home until I miscarried. I rush to ER, when that time came, with cramps and bleeding. Next thing I heard from the ER doctor was that my blood count had reach 59000. I had no idea what had happended. I went to the doctor the next day and there it was, the heart beat. I was very lucky, I was told that because of the miscarrige of the blighten ovum, my other sac had been discovered. No one ever saw the other sac and I would have never known that my little girl was there alive and well. Because of the other baby, my baby now would have not servived. She was born w/many complication but she is healty now and thriving. Moral of the story is to go with your gut feeling. I went with mine and never got the DNC, but who knows if I did get the DNC I probably woulndt be here writing this. I dont want to give false hope but sometimes you just never know. Doctors are human also and they do make mistakes.

My result was negative in the end. I went through all this in July. Both sacs deformed/collapsed. My next attempt resulted in my baby that I had right after thanksgiving.

Confused
by: Brandi

I went to the ER a week and 2 days ago. I had gotten an instant positive pregnancy test at home and was concerned I was really far along because the test line was as dark as the control line. They checked me and my beta was over 10100 and my u/s showed two gestational sacs with no yolk measuring 5 weeks 3 days on b and 5 weeks 4 days on a. I scheduled a dr appt as a follow up as ordered by the hospital. Two days was the recommendation. When I got there the dr did nothing. He did schedule an ultrasound for today. In which I should be 7 weeks. My u/s showed again two sacs no yolk no nothing. I don't cramp, and I haven't even had the slightest bit of anything abnormal. Although my pregnancy symptoms seem to remain unchanged I still feel like I should at least be tired. I feel like something is wrong and my heart is completely broken. My sacs have both grown and I am wondering if I should allow them to clean it up so we can start over or does it sound like I should just wait. I have no idea when my lmp is. I only had symptoms for at most for a week when I tested. I guess my concern is that my gestational sacs were just larger and I'm not really that far along? I'm really confused and I could definitely use some advice. I'm hoping they are just slow growing. I feel like I should have more pregnancy symptoms aside from starving and sore breasts. We were hoping at least one would have had a heartbeat by now. I'm curious if I should wait a week or two and do a recheck? Idk I'm so confused. We tried so hard for a baby, gave up and out of the blue we are pregnant. Any advice ladies? Any good outcomes from similar stories?

blighted ovum
by: Anonymous

today i had my second ultrasound which measured 6w5d and was told he thinks its a bligthed ovum. i have had 2 abortions since 2009 so im scared its true but i really wanted this baby. i still feel pregnant and have starting feeling my usual preggo case of dizziness and nausea due to low iron and b12, and i still have all the other preggo symptoms like sore breasts, fatigue, frequent unrination and always being hungry. i have even grown out of my pre-pregnancy clothes. my boobs even look fuller. so im in shock to how they cant see it yet. i havent had any bleeding or cramping at all.
im hoping he's wrong and its just too early to see anything yet.

Get an FSH Level Test
by: Kelly: Update

Hello everyone. I am sorry that the majority of you are experiencing disappointment as I was. Here is what has been going on since this...
-April 2010 (Ectopic around ovary)
-May 2011 (began speaking with a specialist regarding fertility)
-June 2011 thru today (been undergoing testing for many other factors that female doctors without the specialty don't think about)...

My specialist recommended that I have an FSH (follicle stimulating hormone)test which was done by drawing blood from my arm on day 3 of my cycle. This is a hormone that tells premature eggs to start growing. This growth and development will, ideally, lead to ovulation. If it is elevated (as mine was), you may not be able to carry a baby without undergoing treatment. Sooo, the dr. put me on levothyroxine to bring that number down. Hopefully, the medicine will work and I will be bringing good news to you all soon.

P.S. Ask your doctor for an FSH level test immediately.

in shock
by: Mommy of 3

I am shocked at how common this is. I got pregnant back in 11/2010 (3rd pregnancy) and at my 8 week visit (first visit) My OB did a vaginal u/s to date the pregnancy. To my surprise, I measured 2 weeks smaller and there were TWO sacs!! 1 with baby, 1 appearing to be empty. I had to wait 2 weeks to repeat the scan only to confirm that sac A had a viable baby and sac B remained empty :( That was the longest 2 weeks of my life and I was devastated to lose one of the twins.

My advice...most scans are pretty accurate even this early on (depending on machine and the tech doing it) so please don't get too excited. If possible, try to get your frame of mind to grasp EITHER outcome. I went with the wishful thinking and that made things harder on me after confirming the loss. I hope that you all get the outcomes you are hoping for and that you all have safe and happy pregnancies if they continue.

My surviving sac turned out to be a 34 week premature baby boy we named Brody and he clearly is my miracle baby in more ways than one. :) (born 7-1-2011) God bless you all.

Blighted Ovum
by: Bonnie

I know how you are feeling, all of you. I am 10 weeks pregnant and going through waiting to miscarry a blighted ovum. On the scans there were no signs of a baby just an empty sac, I have had cramping and a little bleeding but nothing major as yet, I will wait it out. This happened 2 years ago as well and then I miscarried naturally.
I hope you all go on to have happy healthy babies.

Common?
by: Anonymous

I am shocked at how "common" this is. I went to my first Dr.s apt. and I should have been 10-14 weeks pregnant....this was July 15 2011. They told me that there was a perfectly healthy sack and placenta but no baby. This is my third pregnancy and nothing like this has ever happened to us. I am having a very hard time coping. I went back for more blood and u/s on the 22 and hcg's had dropped from 15'500 to 11'500. I have read alot but nothing makes sence. I definatly do not feel pregnant and I am not showing much {looks like 9-12 week "fluff") I go again on the 29th for more of the same. I am devastated but know it could be so much worse. I am glad that I didn't see a tiny heart beat or little feet kicking before I lost baby. It just simply wasn't there. It still hurts and I am still waiting to misscarry. The Dr.s keep telling me any day now but it has been months and I haven't had any spotting or bleeding...is this normal. Love for all of the angel babies!

blighted ovum and etopic pregnancy
by: D

Carla, I hope you have answers by now. Back in 1987 I got pregnant. Didn't do many ultrasounds back then. I started to bleed and started to miscarry in the doctor's office. I had a D&C done there and he told me it was a blighted ovum. I still felt pregnant in the week or two after. I had five children previous to this so I knew what it was like to feel pregnant. It turned out that I had a second one, not a blighted ovum but a baby growing in my left fallopian tube. I bled pretty bad and the pain was unbelievable. I had to have emergency surgery to save my life.

Also, I got pregnant a little less than a year later. I HAD MY PERIOD but still felt pregnant.
They told me I couldn't be pregnant because I had my period, told me it was impossible. I was pregnant and it was in my right tube and had to have the surgery again to save my life again.
So just remember, you can still have your period and be pregant but I guess the chances are that it is an etopic one then.

I just recently found out that I was pregnant about 5 and a half weeks. I was sent to the hospital due to my high blood sugar. I just had an ultrasound done and the doctor said that there was a sac but no baby. I am so scared and extremley sad I have 3 children already and this is my first experience with any of this. I have to go back tomorrow gor another ultrasound I am just hoping for the best. I am just praying that I am less months than I am, or that I am having twins or just maybe the baby is developing at a slower rate than expected I am constantly praying that this baby wiill show up on the ultrasound, some sort of hope or small miracle

Twin Blighted Ovum
by: Laura

I had my 1st miscarriage in 2009. When I found out I was preggo again I was excited, but worried. My 1st dr appt said I was 5 1/2 wks. I thought I was only 3 1/2 wks. When I went back 3 weeks later the Dr said I was showing 6 1/2 wks. Dr said there were 2 sacs, 1 w/a fetus & 1 empty. There was no heart beat so she sent me for another ultrasound. She also did a blood test. My HCG levels went from 13k to 78k. The Ultrasound place sent my results to my Dr saying 1 sac was empty, but the other sac showed twins. I went for a follow up ultrasound 2 weeks later only to find out both sacs were now empty. Another blood test showed my HCG levels dropped to 55k. She assured me I didn't do anything wrong. My Dr said she believes I had a blighted ovum. She recommended I have a D&C b/c this is my 2nd miscarriage within 2 years. She said she can send the sacs for genetic testing to see if there was anything genetically wrong or if it was just a blighted ovum. I have D&C set for next week. Hopefully I will get some answers this time.

Im Sorry Kelly but
by: Chrissyoldewurtel

there will be NO change by Wednesday, and there are NO babies, to hope to be ok. I have had the same experience 10 years ago at 19. It was the MOST painful experience of my life, MORE than the labor's and 2 C-sections I have had since then!!!! There is no baby in a blighted ovum. The "sack" did not come out on its own. My body attempted to expell it on its own like a miscarriage, but my body ALSO wouldnt let it pass=EXTREME PAIN. So sorry

by: jenn

I am having the same issue. Thought I was 9 weeks when wen to get my first ultrasound last week. I had two sacs and were only measuring 5 weeks and 2 days. No yolk sac or fetal poles. Went back for another ultrasound yesterday. Sacs had grown but still no yolk sac or fetal pole. Doc has talked about doing D&C but just hoping something changes! I go back next week for last ultrasound. Hoping to see yolk sacs and fetal poles :) Hopefully dates are just off.

Has anyone else not seen fetal poles at 6 weeks?

Rotten blighted ovum
by: 70's Mom

I had a blighted ovum back before ultrasound (1976). I didn't know what was happening. I just knew that my uterus did not feel firm. It felt empty. The Dr. said "We'll assume you are pregnant because you have all the signs." Then one day, at about 3 months my breasts didn't hurt any more and I became more and more tired. I became frantic because something didn't feel right.

Finally, the day before my 5th month office visit, I began to get cramps. I passed blood clots and tissue but not much more than a normal period. I could feel my uterus deflate. By the time I got to the doctor I was running a fever and very debilitated. He said an ovum rotted out in my uterus and felt most of the tissue had passed. He didn't tell me anything else. It was a relief to me because I had felt something was wrong all along. Other people mourned a loss. They didn't understand. It was a hard time and a week of recovery from the infection. Even my husband didn't understand my feelings. One day I woke up and felt like a new person; my energy was back and the world was brighter.

My next doctor told me about blighted ovum when I got pregnant the next time. I had a wonderful son who made me a grandma!

blighted ovum
by: Julie

Unfortunately dear, you have to wait until a follow up ultrasound. With 2 sacks it is MORE hopeful for you though. Atleast one of them should be good, unless you experience moderate to severe bleeding you should be fine. Believe it or not the more sick you feel the better. It means your hormones are still going up. I had to deal with a similar situation twice before my son was born. I had 2 blighted ovums. One with just a sack, no yolk, or baby. Second with a yolk but still no baby. My son, Joshua, just turned 13 months old a couple of days ago. I went to the ER when I was about 4 1/2 wks with him, spotting and crampong, thinking the worst die to my 2 previous pregnancies. The ER doc even told me it was 99% chance of a 3rd miscarriage. Of course I was devestated. They made me come back a week later for hormone level blood work, to their (and our) suprise, my hormones had gone up drmatically. They did another ultrasound at 5 1/2 wks and there was a heartbeat. I nearly passed out from shock. They said it was a great sign. 3 wks later another ultrasound and while he looks like a little alien, there was a heartbeat and movement(not felt but seen). Please don't be discouraged. It may be all alright. I wish you the very very best and congratulations if it's warranted. I pray you're as happy as I am.

UPDATE
by: Kelly

I've been staying pretty positive lately, but recently had an ectopic preg. I caught it early so I was able to get a methotrexate injection instead of surgery. I have been okay by hubby was pretty broken up when the doc told us that it was ectopic.

I read that surgery can cause scarring and be a prime factor of ectopic. Whatever the case, keep your heads up as I will mine. Enjoy life because it is very short. I told hubby that I just can't bear to try again, but honestly - I might in about 6 months.

But for now, anyone else treated with methotrexate for an ectopic?

stressed!
by: Florida Mom

I am six weeks pregnant and went to the doctor yesterday and I was told I had two sacks (fraternal twins). In one sack they can see the baby but in the other sack they can't. I am 38 and I'm really scared. I don't know if that's going to bring complications or what to expect. Has anyone ever gone through this? Some people say it may be too small or the baby is just not in there. I have to go for another sonogram in another 3 weeks.

Triplets or Blighted Ovum
by: Christina

I know it says Twins but.. I went to the Emergency Room 2 and 1/2 weeks ago because I am pregnant and found out I was bleeding and cramping.. The after 7 hours the Dr. had told me nothing but I went to get and ultra sound done and the person who did it informed me that I might be having twins maybe triplets about 5 weeks she could not see the baby in the sac so I was kind of feeling better I went home still spotting on and off then it got heaver 4 days later and then they did another ultrasound and only saw one baby but saw the other 2 sacks and said it was only 5 weeks, so now I don’t know anything I’m hoping for the best but i was really sick and now I’m better...and I have another ultra sound in 5 days so I’m hoping for the best if anyone know anything please tell me I am at my wits end and scared......

2 miscarriages and pregnant again
by: Beth R

I had 2 miscarriages one in may 2009 and one in october 2009. I was around 7 weeks both times. The doctors told me I had a twin blighted ovum the second time. Every time i miscarried I was told its common alot and i should wait 3 months and try again and now i'm pregnant again and its a twin pregnancy again one with a blighted ovum and one showed a fetal pole with no heart rate. The doctors said one could still develop normally but if another u/s doesn't show a heart rate i should have a d&c. I already had 2 d&c's last year. I dont want to have another one because of the risks but i dont want to get an infection either. I'm so angry because i'm 37 and i been trying for years and i was 36 the first time i got pregnant. Different doctors never say the same thing. They say to wait til i'm emotionally ready to try again but i'm not getting younger and i think the longer i wait the more problems i will have. My boyfriend wants kids too.

empty sac at 6 weeks
by: Anonymous

I had one miscarriage before my daughter was born (3 years ago) and 3 miscarriages since her birth. I have a history of Chemo when I was 25. I went for an ultrasound yesterday, thinking I was 6-7 weeks, and the sac was empty. I will go back Friday to determine if this is another miscarriage. The doctor says it probably is, but there is a small hope we were too early yesterday and will see something on Friday.

Blighted Ovum
by: Shannon

I was suppose to be 9 weeks along. When I went for my first Ultrasound, they told me that I had a Blighted Ovum which means theres a sac but no baby. Dr. said its just a fluke thing that unfortunately happens and that once I get my period again after my miscarriage that I could try again. She said normally my next one will be completely normal 99% of the time. Good luck to you and I know you'll do great!! I plan on trying again in a month or 2.

blighted ovum too
by: Anonymous

Ih ave a 7 yr old and a 2 yr old. ever since my 2 yr old was born i have had 3 pregnancies out side the uterus, in april i found out i was 6 weeks preg, this past week i didnt feel preg. i went to the hospital because i had a LOT of white cell discharge, they did an ultrasound because by now i should have been 13 weeks maybe 12, they told me that i had an blighten ovum, witch didnt make any since because i was not bleeding or any sort and i still am not. my hcg level was still at 39,000. ill find out in 2 days if i need a dnc, they said one of the babies could have been sick thats why the other baby didnt produce.. who knows most hospital drs are usually wrong, hoping this time they are.

Thanks for your encouraging words. I had no idea what a blighted ovum was until recently. The good thing is, it is not likely to happen again. So don't fear that possibility, try to stay positive.

Thanks again for your concern.

My blighted ovum story
by: Cherese

Hang in there Kelly. 3 weeks ago I was told I had a blighted ovum. I was 13 weeks pregnant. i started spotting at work and went for 2 ultrasounds and then my doctor told me I was pregnant but there was no baby. I almost fell over. I then took 2 weeks off of work and miscarried naturally. That was difficult but I was told a d&c was the last option. (I did not want one anyway.) This was my first pregnancy, now I'm scared to death for next time. I had bad morning sickness for 3 months and all of a sudden I felt much better. Then 3 days later is when I found out. I feel okay now, its just so hard. I think I'm still in shock. The body is an amazing thing giving that it recognizes abnormalities and takes care of them. Hang in there, happier days are ahead.

The Result
by: Anonymous

Well, after my final 2 ultrasounds (the first showing a yolk sac in one of the ges sacs; then the yolk sac disappeared and both ges sacs appeared to be empty again), my doctor persuaded me to have the d & c. I would've gotten a second opinion if it was any other physician, but I know that he is extremely experienced and educated. Anyway, I was supposed to be 11 weeks by this time so something should've been seen by then.

After my d & c, the pregnancy tissue (as you probably already know) gets sent to the lab for testing. Turns out, one of the sacs was a partial mole. An extremely rare version of a partial mole is when twins are conceived but one embryo begins to develop normally while the other is a mole. In these cases and in my case, the healthy embryo will very quickly be consumed by the abnormal growth.

As a result, I can not get pregnant for a full year (I have to take birth control), and I have to get my hcg levels checked regularly (once a week for the first month, then once a month for a year) to ensure that the number stays below 10 (which is considered to be mildly high).

I'm doing well, now. Just taking it day by day.

similar situation
by: dream

I'm 27 and pregnant for the first time. I've been looking for stories similar to mine and found yours. I scheduled my first dr.'s appt. before I had even gotten a positive pregnancy test. (By the time I went to the appt., I had 3 pos. urine tests though). My first appt. was 3/30/09 and calculating from my LMP, I should have been at 6w 2d, but I am OFTEN late for my period (2 to 9 days), so I knew my dates could be off.

My OB did a vaginal ultrasound without taking a blood test or urine test (actually, I did pee again for them, but she didn't ask for the results 'til later). She didn't see anything on the u/s and sent me immediately to the hospital for a possible ectopic pregnancy, even though I had NO signs of it and am a low-risk pregnancy. I said "couldn't it just be too early to see anything? Maybe I ovulated later and am not that far along." She said she was "pretty sure" it was ectopic and I might have to have surgery that day!

Needless to say, I broke down once I got out of the office. I went to the hospital. They did another u/s and didn't see anything anywhere, including the fallopian tubes and ovaries, so they said they were quite sure I DIDN'T have an ectopic pregnancy and that I was probably just too early. I don't know why my OB didn't say that!

The hosp. took blood and told me to come back in the AM. The next morning, they did ANOTHER u/s and this time, they saw TWO gestational sacs at about 2-3mm!! Again, nothing in my fallopian tubes or ovaries, so they cleared me and sent me home. They also said I was closer to 4 or 5 weeks.

But STILL, no one has told me my hCG levels and they didn't take more blood to "monitor" my levels. I FEEL fine and have NO bleeding or cramping. My next appt. is for Apr. 16. I recalculated my possible ovulation date (8 days later than originally thought), so I should be at 7w 4d (5w 4d gestational) by then and I hope to see some action on that u/s. I'm also thinking of finding an new OB.

My e-mail is dmmhdream@hotmail.com if you want to talk with me. I'd like to know the result of your pregnancy and tests as well! Good luck with everything!

Dear Kelly,

I wish you the very best of luck on your next ultrasound and will be praying for you too. Did you get a chance to read some of the stories on the website? If not please read them. I had really given up hope until I had read the different stories. It goes to show that every case is different and that we should never give up hope. Some women never even seen their babies until 9-12 weeks and thank goodness they decided to wait to have a D&C. Please keep me updated. You can email me at bbynurse@hotmail.com if you do not want to go through the posts. I will be praying for you.....Christy

Well, they still did not see anything in the ges. sacs, but I had her to measure them because the website blighted FAQ section had been an excellent resource for facts. I read that you can be considered to have a blighted ovum if your ges. sacs are at least 20 mm without a trace of an embryo, and 10mm without a trace of a yolk sac. After mesuring the sacs, both were well under 7 mm. They were a bit larger than the week before, but not at that marker yet. In my opinion, there is still hope. I have another ultrasound on next Thursday, March 5th. I am pretty sure that there will be a definite answer by then (either the sacs will be to large and empty, or the babies will show themselves).

I had hcg levels taken before my first ultrasound which were good, so the nurse said, but the second one did not double - instead, increased a little bit. I was not informed then as I am now, so I did not physically see the numbers or ask for them. I will ask my doctor for those next week. I wish you the best and I am praying for you. Thank you again for taking your time to comment.

Twins or Blighted Ovum
by: Christy

Dear Kelly,

I am going through the exact same thing as you. I should be 7 weeks & 1 day but I am not sure because my menstrual cycles are irregular. My husband and I have been trying for 6 1/2 years to conceive our first baby. I am 34 years old. My husband & I were so excited but alot of that excitement has turned to worry and fear. I just had my 3rd ultrasound on Mon 2/23/09 and the doctor also saw 2 sacs with no signs of a baby/babies(no fetal pole or heartbeat). My ultrasound looks almost exactly like yours. My doctor seemed to think that the second sac I have is a blood clot although I have never had any bleeding. Do you have HCG quant levels done? If so are they rising like they should? My levels are rising slowly and are not doubling. The last one I had was 4951 on 2/23. If you are pregnant with twins, the HCG level can be higher than normal. I am scheduled for another ultrasound(my 4th) on 3/2 to determine if they can see anything consistant with a viable pregnancy. I am either earlier than I think or have a blighted ovum. Do you know if you have a tipped uterus? I have one. That can sometimes make it difficult to see the developing baby or babies. It still may just be too early to see yet since you are only 7 weeks. Some sites tell you that it is not until the 8th week you can really see signs of a pregnancy. You need to go to the site www.misdiagnosedmiscarriage.com and read that before making any decision about a D & C. That site really helped to open my eyes and I hope it helps you to. I am a labor/delivery nurse and all of this stuff is even new to me. I never even heard of a blighted ovum until I got pregnant. I wish you the very best tomorrow.

Thank you for your concern and prayers. The ultrasound tech kept asking me if I was sure about the dates and if I could be earlier. I guess it is a possibility. I will update you all tomorrow after my ultrasound and meeting with my doctor.
