Mono-di twins share a placenta but have separate amniotic sacs. Because they share a placenta, their blood vessels are intertwined and the concern we have as OB/GYNs is for Twin-to-Twin Transfusion syndrome or TTTS in which one twin gets too much blood and the other not enough (easiest way to explain but more complicated than that). Mo-Mo Twins are twins that share one placenta and one amniotic sac. This is a very high risk pregnancy as it is very common for cord accidents to occur in which the umbilical cords get entangled which can lead to birth defects and in the worst case scenario, death of one or both of the twins. Di-Di twins, the most common, have separate placentas and amniotic sacs.
