How to tell... by: MEL
I'm 12 weeks pregnant with fraternal twins too. They can tell because each baby is in its own placenta's As they are 2 eggs fertilised by 2 seperate sperm. Fraternal twins are not identical! They may look very similer but their DNA structure Is different. Identical twins share a placenta as they plit from the same egg fertilised by usually only 1 sperm. They have pretty much identical DNA. Hope that helps :0)

Identical vs faternal by: Anonymous
I don't think that's 100% true. I found out at 9 weeks I was having twins with 2 separate sacks. But my dr and my midwife as well as the ultrasound tech said. They could still be identical twins, even though they have separate sacks. It all depends on if they are a girl and a boy and if they are the same sex then you have to wait till they are born and do a blood test.

Faternal twins by: Anonymous
Hi Halley, Faternal means that they are not going to be identical and because the lira sound shows that they are in two separate sacks that means they are Faternal. You can tell as early as 5 weeks sometimes.

You can tell at 7 weeks by: Anonymous
That's not true. An internal ultrasound should be able to tell you how many you are carrying as early as 7 weeks. Hope this helps.

How do you know they are fraternal? by: Halley
Hi, I was just wondering how you know that you are having fraternal twins so soon in your pregnancy. I'm 20 weeks and I was told by my midwife that we wont know until they are born. ( Unless During my next ultrasound they are boy / girl twins. That would be a givin.) Please let me know what you did to find out. I'm so eager to know.
